What is Art ? by Ede An Tuath Janos

This is a Guest blog entry on the “What is Art?” topic by Ede An Tuath Janos:

In his book http://www.amazon.com/Sculpting-Time-Tarkovsky-Filmaker-Discusses/dp/0292776241 , film director Andrei Tarkovsky states:
“The aim of art is to prepare a person for death, to plough and harrow his soul, rendering it capable of turning to good.”
In a similar vein, in http://vimeo.com/44846834 he states that, art is a means to an end. What I do not agree with in there is that, he claims that, knowledge distracts us from our purpose in life. And yet he fails to state what that very purpose is, actually.
Strange enough, we find a similar quote wherein least expected. This time, however, “art” is substituted for “discipline”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discipline_(King_Crimson_album)#Song_notes (the last paragraph in the anchored text). On the cover, the quote is attributed to the Chinese book of wisdom http://www.sacred-texts.com/tao/taote.htm . I once had it in my hands but unable to find the said quote within, though.
Tarkovsky links art to life. Surprisingly, so does another, similar quote. What else art bears? Hopes and fears, according to Lucian of Samosata, as quoted here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hopes_and_Fears_(Art_Bears_album)#Album_title .
For myself, however, art is a form of my expression. It is my way to communicate (myself) to others.
As a wannabe/would be artist, I believe in involved art only. As a human being, however, it seems that, more often than not, I just do art for art’s sake, free form(at).

The things we love we have to learn to leave alone

I wouldn’t coax the plant if I were you.

Such watchful nurturing may do it harm.

Let the soil rest from so much digging

And wait until it’s dry before you water it.

The leaf’s inclined to find its own direction;

Give it a chance to seek the sunlight

for itself.

Much growth is stunted by too careful

Too eager tenderness.

The things we love we have to learn to

leave alone.

approaching Beauty with a sense of humility

must Beauty really be expressed?

a wonderful talk about True Beauty…

May 4, 2013

“A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive.”

the Messengers

The Ancient of Days, W.B.

The Ancient of Days“- William Blake

let us start with the words of the great Beethoven:

“Tones sound, and roar and storm about me until I have set them down in notes.”

and continue with those of Michelangelo:

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

do you notice anything? always when great artists of mankind such as those mentioned above and many more talk about how a work of art came to be, they give you the feeling that there is something inside, something that came to them, that they felt urged to release, to express, to put it in some kind of shape and that they can find no rest or relief until they do so. it feels like they don’t have any other choice but to express that which came to them. seldom, or almost never, will you hear from such an artist something like I created this work of art or this is my creation. it is as if they have a message that they absolutely have to deliver, each in its own art, in its own way…

did you ever wonder why these giants were so humble and yet able to leave behind such beauty, such perfection, such trace of immortality imprinted in matter? how do they manage to leave themselves as individual personalities out of this and just be this perfect channel for the message that they need to deliver? in the case of artists such of these, the urge is so big that they are probably left with little choice.

“The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.” Michelangelo

“Every beauty which is seen here by persons of perception resembles more than anything else that celestial source from which we all are come.” Michelangelo

as these great artists, each human being has a message to deliver, something to achieve, a role to play in this Grand Scheme of things, all for the sake of growth, of evolution of reaching true potential for humankind as a whole. we too feel a certain urge to do some things and in doing them we have this feeling that it is what we were somehow supposed to do. this is possible only if we manage to lose this sense of personality, this sense of being an individual that we build and cultivate and allow our true nature to be expressed.

“I am a poor man and of little worth, who is laboring in that art that God has given me in order to extend my life as long as possible.” Michelangelo

let’s set this Person that we think we are aside and let the Message we embody come through…there is such peace and joy in that.

Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.” Leonardo da Vinci

our life is our work of art.

la drum de seară

se-ntretaie o cărare cu cealaltă

dar ei cată care-n lături

privirea s-o ferească

şi din cale vor să fugă

dar li-i firul încă scurt

de nu-i Foc

de ce ridică prafu’-n urmă-i

când aleargă

de nimic ca să se ascundă ?

Domnu’ a şti cum le aşează

şi le ţese blând pe toate….
